When it came time to find a place for the reception, the decision became much easier when Kristin and Scott visited The Whalehead Club. Situated on 39 acres as part of the Currituck Heritage Park, the Whalehead Club is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.About 85 years ago, Edward Collings Knight, Jr., moved to Corolla from Philadelphia (*fill in your own Philly/carpetbagger joke here*), in part to pursue his love of hunting. Just three years and nearly $400,000 later, he had constructed a beautiful, 21,000-square-foot residence overlooking the Currituck Sound. Local lore would lead us to believe that Knight partially built the home for his wife, Marie Louise, since, at the time, women were forbade from area hunt club membership (some people dig chicks with guns, but whatever). Built in the art nouveau style, the residence was called Corolla Island by the Knights, and it was used for hunting and entertaining guests.
The amazing structure served a variety of purposes over the years, from Coast Guard facility to a school for boys to a testing area for solid rocket fuel. The building eventually fell into disrepair until the community stepped in about 15 years ago. Currituck County and the Whalehead Trust helped restore the area and incorporate it into the heritage park. Tours of what is affectionately referred to as the "Jewel by the Sea" are now available.
Kristin and Scott will welcome friends and family on the north lawn, where all will enjoy the original boathouse, soundfront gazebo, historic bridge, and breathtaking views of Currituck Sounds and the Currituck Beach Light. Plus, there will be alcohol here.
